VK Build Progress

June 4, 2009 09:15 by Marty

Every night this week I've been getting home from work at 7pm and going straight out to the shed and working on the 'K till 12:30-1 in the morning. My good mate Dazza has been busting his ass to help me get this thing done by the weekend.

We dropped the engine in last weekend so this week we've been flat out hooking up all the auxiliaries. There was a few problems with the original wiring that Dazza found and fixed up and we've added heaps of new stuff in. We've fitted the AU thermos and tranny cooler from the wagon, borrowed my monster tacho and oil pressure warning setup from my torana. The warning lights from the computer were just hanging off the computer under the carpet, so Daz extended them and worked them into the factory dash - we used the EST warning light as the engine management light and wired in the original alternator warning light. We also mounted the diagnostic port inside the glovebox so that we can easily diagnose what's going on if I see the engine management light.

The alternator warning light is very important for burnout comps because it lets you know when you've thrown the belts off the engine!! That's exactly what happened to me in the last burnout comp in the wagon, but I didn't put it all together in my head because I was too busy doing a skid. This time it's burnt into my brain that if I see that light, I need to drive out of there because it's going to overheat very quickly!

Engine In

May 31, 2009 08:14 by Marty

Yesterday we gave the car a bit of a cleanup and started going over it to sus out what needs doing. Dazza tidied up the engine bay wiring and we mounted up the map sensor and extra computer bits that these things run.

Today Daz and me shoe-horned the motor in on our own. It's alot harder with the extractors than with the stock headers on it, but we managed to get everything mounted up.

Before we put the motor in, we put a new set of plugs and leads on it, replaced the starter motor and one of the engine mounts. The old mount was completely torn off!! The best tear job I'd done yet! That's why I've always got a spare one handy because I'm always doing mounts in my cars.

So all the hard work is done now, but there's still a shit load of small stuff that needs doing.

Ready to go

New VK Project Plans

May 24, 2009 11:36 by Marty

I didn't post up any info last week incase the deal fell through. So now that the car's mine, here she is!

Previous owner in burnout comp

The story behind the car is that the previous owner did it up as a burnout car. It ran an injected 304 with a Yella Terra top mount blower. He spent a fair bit of money setting it up properly for burnouts - rebuilt diff and box, burnout exhaust, big fuel system and so on. Anyway he damaged his engine and took it to get rebuilt and the builder ran off with his motor and his money (and I suspect some other parts off the car). So after getting done over hard the bloke gave up and stuck the rolling shell on ebay. When I saw this car on ebay I knew it was perfect for me because it fitted in with the parts that I have ready for the project (the wagon setup).

This car has everything that the wagon doesn't and everything thats missing, I have!

Here's the specs of the car;

  • VK Sedan resprayed in 2pak oranage
  • Set up for injected 5L - ready to bolt motor in and plug in
  • Rebuilt diff with 4.5 gears and a mini spool (looks to be a salsbury, not sure on the axels etc)
  • Rebuilt gearbox TH700 with Stage 1 shift kit + 2500rpm stally
  • Surge tank in boot with big Bosch pump and 3/8" lines
  • Pacemaker extractors with a twin 2.5" exhaust dumping to the back tyres
  • Bonnet mount guages
  • Battery relocated to boot
  • VL calais interior
  • Momo steering wheel

I'm going to transfer this stuff from the wagon into this shell;

  • Engine 304i
  • VT front brake conversion
  • Radiator and thermos
  • Tranny cooler
  • B&M Pro Rachet shifter
  • Battery

I'm going to rob my tacho out of my torry and the 17" clubby wheels from my VR.

The plan for this car is to do a seriously quick budget build and have a car that's cool enough to enter in car events and the muscle car cruises, but at the same time have a genuine street car that I can drive past the cops and not get screwed by them. I'm trying to go for the oposite to my torry.

The goal is to get this thing to the WSID Burnout Comp on the 6th of June. That's just under 2 weeks away!!

That's a fair bit of work to get done, but I'm confident that we'll make it to the comp. It won't be road worthy or registered by then, but once the comp has been and gone I'll be working to get the car ready for rego.

Back at home
Back at home, ready for heart transplant!

New VK

May 23, 2009 11:08 by Marty

Today we picked up the new project that I said that I was preparing for. The car was in Canberra and I'm in Sydney. My mate Duffy kindly offered to tow it for me with his beast of a Landcruiser. We hired the trailer last night and got everything ready. We started out at 6:30 this morning and by the time we dropped the trailer back and put the car away it was about 8:00pm, it's been a looooong day...  I can't be stuffed posting any info on the car tonight, I'll do it tomorrow!
